- I hate to tell you this, but your chances of winning the are greater then getting any favorable resoloution from anybody. I had a $3000 household card that I had not used in 2 years. Out of the blue I got a letter saying due to negative onfo contained in a credit check my limit was now $300. I work with credit and have probably evaluated 50, 000 credit reports. As upset as I am, as much as I know negative info reported recently is IMPOSSIBLE, I also know many that have tried and failed to get any sort of justice. I was just talking to a young attorney yesterday who is planning a cl action lawsuit, of course I would love to see this system fixed. I would not bet $1 he will even get it off the ground. I have seen 4 cl action lawsuits for reasons much worse then denial of credit go down in flames. FTC has generic answers such as the one below if you file a complaint and they investigate with the CBC _________________________________________________ The negative factors that bring your score down remain on your credit report for seven years and can adversely affect your FICO score. But lenders typically look back only in the past two years when they make credit decisions. One 30 - day late payment shouldn't make a difference. Lenders look for trends
- Two things, first, are you sure you got a complete copy of your report? In the letter you got refusing credit, it should have told you who provided the report they used as a basis and a way for you to obtain a copy of the same report. Did you do that? Get a copy after you got the letter? If not, you may be relying on old and incorrect information. If you DID, then you should have seen several sections. One section will have all of the addresses of where you have lived. One section for big ticket items like a mortgage. Another for credit cards and store charge accounts you have or have had for maybe the last 10 years or so. In this section, the credit card and charge accounts, you should see several things, like the maximum you have ever charged on the account and some statements about payments. It is in this section you may find an innocuous statement about late payments. There will be two psrts, one for active accounts and one for closed accounts. Read the all ccarefully. Now for the horror story, cross linked credit. Have you shared an account with another? I ask this because a while back, I got a divorce. Five years later, I was dumping high interest rate credit cards for ones with lower rates and I was refused. The reason: a bankruptcy on file. Say what!?! I never filed for a bankruptcy. I filed for a copy of the credit report and sure enough, a charge account at Sears had been closed by default because of bankruptcy. The problem is this, it wasn't my account, it belonged to my ex - wife and even though we were divorced, her default reflected back to me because I had shared her account and she never removed my name after the divorce. It took a cl action lawsuit to finally get this damaging piece of incorrect information out of my credit report. In the closed account section, was where I finally saw the statement which was why I was refused, "balance discharged through bankruptcy proceedings. " It took me a while to find it, since the entry was from 3 years previous to the current date. Initially, I did not even think about closed accounts and was baffled as to why I was refused. It took a call to my mortgage company to see what THEY had I had just concluded a refinance on my house which finally triggered me into looking at the closed account section, at their suggestion. My mortgage company had my payment history and a closed account was of no concern to them, hence their willingness to talk to me about it all
- It is possible for credit card companies to get confused when they deal with people with the same name. ex: If John Smith has bad credit and your name is John Smith as well, the credit card companies can pair your credit with John Smith the over spender and under payer, and you end up paying for his sins
- Double check to make sure that Citi has your correct social security number, date of birth, and correct addresses. Then ask Citi for a copy of the credit report that they obtained. It may take some nagging but you should be able to get the answers you need
- I understand your frustration - but really you are in a no win situation. They can refuse credit at any time to anyone. So you really don't have much to report. Why don't you just apply for a different credit card ? I would try Orchard Bank available at the link below dgftaworld.net

- I had something similar happen once with one of my credit card applications. Their reason for denying me - they claimed I had a judgment on my reports, which I did not. I called them up and 'spoke to a supervisor'. I explained that their reason for denial was based on an untrue fact. The supervisor put me on hold for a minute or so then came back and said - congratulations you are approved. Mistakes do happen, call them up and speak with a supervisor or credit yst. Politely explain that they denied you for something that is not on your reports. Ask them to reconsider your application
