Credit Report File Dispute with Agency or Credit Card Company?
- to the credit reporting company's. But this may not end there as you may have a one in the same name posting and what is called a merged file with say another John Jones
- Are these actually your accounts that just have misinformation or are they not your accounts? Either way you need to start with the Credit Reporting Agency listing the item first. If there is more than one CRA that is listing the item you need to dispute it with each one individually. If they are not your accounts you not only need to dispute those but place a fraud alert on your report because it may not be a "common name" problem but an issue with iden y theft. If these are your accounts you have to be careful and make sure your disputes are valid. I am not sure if you really have 10 or if that was just a number you came up with. But if you send in disputes and the CRA decides that some are frivolous, this makes it tougher for you to get them to investigate ones that would actually be valid. If you are dis late payments, be sure you have proof to back it up. If it is something like incorrect balances or an account that was actually closed it can sometimes take a few months to "catch up" so dis them may not be necessary. I am not saying that you can not dispute them. Just when you are claiming several inaccuracies you need to be sure that you are actually dis them for valid reasons
- Send your dispute to the credit bureau first. You should pull a report from each credit bureau before you send them a dispute. The errors may not be on all three reports and sending a marked copy of the credit report will expedite the reveiw process. If you can not get it resolved thru the credit bureaus, send each creditor a certified, return receipt letter requesting copies of contracts or other documents that prove the debt is yours. If you have a 'merged' account problem, it may take a while to get it straightened out
- do not bother sending proof like Becky suggested, as it will not do any good. The credit bureaus do NOT look at the "evidence" you provide, they simply run your letter through a scanner which reads your letter. The whole process is pretty much entirely automated. I suggest sending every letter to the credit bureaus on some form of decorative paper and in a blue or purple font. That will prevent the scanners from reading the letter and force an actual human to deal with it
- When you find something incorrect in your credit report, you should alert, in writing, both the credit bureau who provided the report and the information provider. This is the process to dispute credit report information. If you have statements or cancelled checks that support your claim, include copies of them with your statement keep the originals for records. In your statement, include your name, complete address, the information you are dis, and the reason the information is not accurate. It will be helpful to include a copy of your credit report with the disputed information highlighted. Send your credit report dispute via certified mail with return receipt requested. This way you not only have proof that you sent the dispute, but also that the credit bureau received your dispute. Keep a copy of the letter along with any enclosures you sent. The Credit Bureau Responds To Your Dispute The credit bureau has 30 days to investigate your dispute and respond to you, in writing, with the results of the investigation. Any data you provided about the inaccuracy of the information will be forwarded to the original information provider. The information provider is then required to investigate and respond back to the credit bureau. Once the investigation is complete, the credit bureau will provide you with the results, along with a free copy of your credit report if the dispute resulted in a change. You can request that the credit bureau send a correction notice to any company that accessed your credit report within the past six months. If there is inaccurate information in one credit bureau?s version of your credit report, it?s likely that the information will be inaccurate on the other two bureaus' reports as well. You should check all three credit reports to be sure that the information in each is complete and accurate.
